The 152nd Kentucky Derby runs May 2 at Churchill Downs, and the prep race season has delivered. We've had late-closing freight trains, nailbiting noses, a fallen favorite, and an international invader from Dubai. With the final major preps — Blue Grass, Santa Anita Derby, and Wood Memorial — coming April 4, now is the perfect time to break down every race that matters, what the numbers tell us, and where the points stand heading into the home stretch of the Road to the Derby.

Here's everything you need to know about the races that have shaped the 2026 Derby field — with times, Beyer Speed Figures, and what it all means for May 2.

The Florida Derby is historically one of the two most predictive prep races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Grade I, $1 million, at Gulfstream Park over 1 1/8 miles — it is as close to a dress rehearsal for Churchill Downs as the calendar provides in March.

Commandment made it look like a coronation. The Into Mischief colt trained by Brad Cox arrived at Gulfstream undefeated in 2026 — winning the Mucho Macho Man and the Fountain of Youth (G2) by a neck — and delivered under pressure when The Puma pressed him hard through the stretch. Flavien Prat kept him focused, he dug in, and he won by a nose. The 100 Beyer Speed Figure is outstanding — one of the top figures posted in any prep race this cycle. His true ability may be even better than that figure suggests since he had company all the way down the lane and never got a moment to breathe.

What makes Commandment particularly dangerous: Brad Cox has done this before. He trained Learned Horseman to the 2024 Derby after a Florida Derby win and he understands exactly how to peak a horse on the first Saturday in May. Commandment is the horse to beat.

🌿 Why This Race Matters

Since 1990, the Florida Derby has produced more Kentucky Derby top-three finishers than any other prep race not run in Kentucky itself. The 1 1/8 mile distance at Gulfstream tests stamina without fully asking the Derby question of 1 1/4 miles. A horse that wins here with authority has proven they can handle a long stretch drive under pressure — exactly what Churchill Downs demands.

If Commandment won with guts, Renegade won with class. The Todd Pletcher trainee sat patiently off a 27-1 longshot pace-setter, waited for the field to come back to him, and then closed like a freight train under Irad Ortiz Jr. — winning by 4 lengths. Four lengths. In a Grade I prep race. That is a dominant performance.

The 98 Beyer Speed Figure is just two points shy of Commandment's 100 — effectively identical in terms of what the figure is saying about their ability. The fractions tell an interesting story: the pace was honest — :47.80 for the half, 1:12.52 for three-quarters — but not suicidal. Renegade won with energy to spare, which is exactly what you want to see. His winning time of 1:49.70 for nine furlongs is solid for Oaklawn in March conditions.

Todd Pletcher with Irad Ortiz Jr. is a powerful combination and Renegade has done nothing but improve with each start. The Runaway Horse analysis notes he "has just continued to step forward with each and every start" — that trajectory is what makes Derby winners. He is the second horse on the board and a live threat for the roses.

🌿 Why This Race Matters

The Arkansas Derby has produced American Pharoah and Smarty Jones as recent winners — two of the most celebrated horses of their eras. Oaklawn's dirt surface runs fast and honest, giving you a clean read on a horse's true speed figure. A 98 BSF at Oaklawn in a 9-furlong prep carries significant weight. The race also attracts Midwest horses that may be flying under the radar of the California and Florida circuits.

The most eyebrow-raising result of the entire prep season. Emerging Market won the Louisiana Derby in just his second career start — a remarkable achievement that either signals a generational talent or a horse that got lucky with trip. Chad Brown doesn't send horses to $1 million Grade II races without knowing what he has, and the trainer's confidence in a lightly-raced horse says plenty.

The 90 Beyer Speed Figure is the lowest winning figure among the major preps — a legitimate concern. His career best of 97 suggests he's capable of more, but the Derby is run against horses posting 98s and 100s. The 1 3/16 mile distance at Fair Grounds is the longest of any major prep, which in theory is encouraging for stamina at Churchill Downs — but Emerging Market now has to prove he can step up in company.

This is a horse worth watching closely in final works heading toward May 2. If his morning times tighten up and he shows the kind of energy in training that Brown's horses typically display pre-Derby, Emerging Market at any reasonable price could be a play worth making.

🌿 Why This Race Matters

The Louisiana Derby at 1 3/16 miles is the longest major prep race on the Road to the Derby calendar — effectively a stamina test that Churchill Downs's 1 1/4 miles will only extend. A horse that can handle 9.5 furlongs at pace without tiring has already answered one of the central Derby questions before arriving in Louisville. Fair Grounds also has a long history of producing legitimate Derby threats from horses overlooked by the coasts.

A 94 Beyer Speed Figure on a synthetic surface, winning by 2½ lengths — Fulleffort looked dominant. Brad Cox has now won two major March preps with different horses (also saddling Commandment in the Florida Derby), which is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the depth of his stable.

The massive caveat with Fulleffort is the one that Daily Racing Form's David Aragona flagged directly: he has never run on dirt. Every single start of his career has been on the synthetic Tapteta surface at Turfway Park. Churchill Downs runs on dirt — deep, grinding, demanding dirt. Synthetic-to-dirt transitions have burned bettors repeatedly. The Daily Racing Form drew the comparison to Final Gambit, another Brad Cox synthetic specialist who followed the same path and finished fourth in last year's Derby. Aragona's assessment: Fulleffort "does not have that electric turn of foot. But he's a grinder." A grinder on synthetic can look elite. A grinder on dirt can look ordinary. He needs a dirt work or two that turns heads before May 2.

🌿 Why This Race Matters

The Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway carries 100 Championship Series points and has become an important late-winter qualifying race. Its synthetic surface, however, makes evaluating its winners more difficult than any other prep race on the board. Treat a Jeff Ruby winner's BSF with a 5-7 point adjustment downward when projecting to dirt performance — the surfaces genuinely play differently.

FOY→ Florida Derby Path

This was the race that first put Commandment on the national radar. He won a stretch duel against the talented Chief Wallabee by a neck — showing for the first time that he could handle real pressure from a quality horse. The Fountain of Youth is traditionally the first serious test for Gulfstream-based Derby hopefuls, and Commandment passed it emphatically. His connections immediately pointed toward the Florida Derby, which he won a month later. This was the beginning of a streak that has him at the top of the Derby board today.

🌿 Why This Race Matters

The Fountain of Youth is the traditional first rung on the Gulfstream Derby prep ladder. At 1 1/16 miles it's shorter than the Florida Derby, but it separates the legitimate contenders from horses who only look good in sprint distances. Chief Wallabee's runner-up here — and again in the Florida Derby — confirms he is a genuine threat in his own right and a horse worth following closely as the calendar turns to April.

The Rebel was a photo finish that could have gone either way — Class President won at 19-1 odds by the slimmest of margins over Silent Tactic, who was arguably the more impressive runner in the race despite losing. Silent Tactic finished second by a nostril after tracking the pace brilliantly, and his performance here earned him enough respect to head into the Arkansas Derby as a serious contender. Class President's win was legitimate but may have had as much to do with Silent Tactic's wide trip as his own superiority. The Rebel produced two horses worth tracking all the way to Louisville.

🌿 Why This Race Matters

Oaklawn Park has been one of the most productive Derby prep venues in the country for decades. The Rebel is the first serious test of the Oaklawn Derby trail, and horses who perform well here — win or lose — have consistently shown up on the Derby leaderboard. Silent Tactic's runner-up here followed by his runner-up in the Arkansas Derby makes him one of the most consistent horses in the prep cycle, even if he's still looking for that first big win.

5WSwung Wide to Win

Iron Honor won the final Gotham Stakes ever run at Aqueduct — the historic New York track closing its doors as a racing venue — with a career-best 91 Beyer Speed Figure. The Chad Brown trainee swung five-wide into the stretch to win by a length, which is an encouraging sign of ability but also raises the question of whether that wide trip inflated his winning margin. Still, a 91 BSF at one mile in February from a horse that just entered the Derby picture is meaningful. Iron Honor heads to the Wood Memorial on April 4 looking to follow up, and a big figure there could vault him into serious contention.

🌿 Why This Race Matters

The Gotham has historically been a steppingstone to the Wood Memorial rather than the Derby itself — horses rarely go directly from the Gotham to Churchill Downs. But a 91 BSF at one mile shows enough raw speed to project into Derby company, and Chad Brown's training record with New York-based horses on the Derby trail is among the best in the sport.

🚨 Paladin — Out of the Derby Trail

The horse that entered 2026 as the clear favorite — unbeaten, trained by Chad Brown, winner of the Remsen (G2) and Risen Star (G2) — suffered a non-displaced condylar fracture of his right front ankle while preparing for the Blue Grass Stakes on March 28. His connections announced he will be sidelined from the Triple Crown trail entirely.

This changes everything. Paladin's absence creates a wide-open Derby picture and directly elevates every horse on the leaderboard. Commandment is now the clear market favorite but he's far from a lock — the 2026 Derby could be one of the most competitive in recent memory without a dominant frontrunner.

What Comes Next: April 4 — Super Saturday

Three more Grade I preps run on April 4 — each offering 100 points to the winner — and they will reshape this leaderboard dramatically. The Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland (1 1/8 miles) draws Reagan's Honor, Brant, Further Ado, and Creole Chrome. The Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita (1 1/8 miles) will see Potente, Intrepido, Robusta, and So Happy go at it under Bob Baffert's watchful eye. And the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct (1 1/8 miles) brings Iron Honor, Ottinho, Albus, Minorinconvenience, and Red Zone Runner — 13 horses chasing a ticket to Louisville.

Any of those races could produce the horse that wins the Kentucky Derby on May 2. That's why we watch.

🎙️ Andy's Take

Commandment is the horse I want. Brad Cox, Gulfstream-based, undefeated in 2026, 100 Beyer in a Grade I, and a trainer who knows exactly how to peak a horse for the first Saturday in May. With Paladin off the trail, there is no clear favorite that scares me more.

Renegade at a price is my value play. A 98 Beyer by four lengths at Oaklawn under Irad Ortiz Jr. is a monster performance, and Todd Pletcher has won this race before. If the Derby morning-line has him at 8-1 or better, I'm putting him in my exotics.

Fulleffort worries me until I see him work on dirt. A 94 Beyer on synthetic means nothing until he proves he can replicate it on Churchill Downs's main track. Brad Cox is the best trainer in the country — but the synthetic-to-dirt jump has humbled better horses than this one.

The Derby is 33 days away. Fairmount Park opens April 14. We'll have more horse racing coverage between now and May 2. This is the best time of year to be a racing fan. 🐎
